School creates sculpture for former principal

More than a year ago, the former principal of our school, Hal Pitts, died, which broke the hearts of many. The school's mascot is a bobcat, so in memory of our beloved principal, Buck Lake Elementary School built a "Bobcat National Reading Park" in the library where students can go and read. The school has decided to buy a sculpture in memory of our late principal.

W. Stanley Proctor is a local professional artist who is internationally known. He paints and sculpts, and one of his sculptures titled "Summertime Read" is just the one the school was looking for. If you haven't guessed, Mr. Pitts loved to read. He encouraged everyone to sometimes just sit down and read a book. That's why the school made the "National Reading Park."

"Summertime Read" is a statue of a boy on a bench reading some books. It is going to go in the front of the school on the north side. A sidewalk curves around a tree and has a rounded end where the sculpture will go. Additional features will be added such as landscaping and benches. We will call the area "The Reading Tree." I hear it will be very nice.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, Buck Lake Elementary School is going to have a Bash & Dash, which is sort of like a fair with a race. At 10 a.m., the "Summertime Read" sculpture will be dedicated.
