Brogan offers real body experience for learning
Humans are among the most complex creatures in the world. The world's smartest scientists don't even know everything there is to know about the body. Even so, they've created an exhibit where visitors can explore the human body simply by going to the Mary Brogan Museum.
The Our Body: The Universe Within exhibition has been around the country, and has finally come to Tallahassee.
In a recent article, I talked about a tour in Atlanta, Ga. with terra cotta warriors from China. The Our Body exhibit has actual bodies on display. These dead people are from China; what a coincidence!
The people on display are real. To preserve their bodies for use in museums, there was a method called polymer impregnation. This is where they replaced all the body's water and fat with a type of liquid plastic. In the end, it looks kind of real. Some of the bodies were used for showing bones, some for muscles, and some were cut up and put in display cases. Imagine knowing that you will be cut up and put on display for others' education!
To me, the exhibit was both educational and fun. Before seeing it, we were a little nervous because we thought it might be a little disturbing. It actually wasn't, and it was great for all ages.
After seeing the Our Body exhibit, it's always fun to see the other two floors of the museum. There are all kinds of fun areas where you can play with neat scientific objects. I even saw two elderly people visiting the museum; I didn't see any children with them, and yet they were enjoying the place. The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science is one of my favorite museums, and it's especially nice with this human anatomy exhibit.
